Tenant slams ‘diabolical’ Assembly Rooms sale
New owner of the Assembly Rooms, Boston, Matthew Clark.
Negotiations around the sale of Boston’s Assembly Rooms have been handled ‘diabolically’ – according to one business owner.
Maxine Hill, who runs Lovelace’s florist on Fish Hill, said she and other tenants beneath the historic building only found out who their new landlord would be on the day the sale of the building went through last week.
She said it had led to a lot of uncertainty for the businesses, both over their future and over what the premises could become.
Maxine told The Standard: “We’ve just heard rumours. We didn’t know what was happening. It’s been handled diabolically.”
The building was bought by leisure entrepreneur Matthew Clark, who said he plans to use the site as an entertainment venue – though he said he did not know what form this would take.
○A spokesman for Boston Borough Council, which previously owned the building, said money saved on its upkeep would be used to plug a predicted £1 million funding gap. Money from the sale will be used for other capital projects.
