Town centre residents face a council tax rise after a council committee took on the £34,000 costs of the Garfits Lane Playing Field.

The decision was made at a meeting of Boston Town Area Committee on Wednesday, despite opposition which saw the vote end up 6-6 and saw Chairman Coun Mike Gilbert casting the deciding vote.

Adding the area into BTAC’s remit will see an extra £33,770 added to its budget and will see band D council tax bills for Boston Services raise by £3.88 (two per cent) from £8.85 to £12.72.

The recommendation that Garfits Lane Playing Field costs be funded by BTAC was put forward by Boston Borough Council’s cabinet.

The playing field makes £300-a-year income from about 20 sports events, including the Spalding Sunday League, but has expenditures of £24,740 on grounds maintenance and £9,330 on premises costs including business rates and utilities.

Concerns were raised by councillors that the decision was being made too quickly and without planning on how to deal with the added cost.
Coun Derek Richmond said the costs were only about a penny a day.
