Unemployment has risen in Boston, says CAB

UNEMPLOYMENT fears have been voiced by Boston’s Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB), despite official figures stating there has been a slight decline in numbers in the area.

Yvonne Robinson, advice services manager for the organisation, said she and her team had noticed the amount of people coming to them for unemployment advice had gone up in the later months of the year, and added that she thought the number was set to increase further.

Her comments were made just weeks after official figures showed that unemployment in the East Midlands had dropped by 0.1 per cent.

The Labour Market Survey for December 2011 shows that 7.7 per cent of people in Boston are unemployed, but only 3.6 per cent are claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA).

The number is 0.36 per cent less than the national average.

Ms Robinson said the figure was not reflected in the number of people in the town asking for help.

She added: “I can honestly say there has definitely been a trend of more and more people coming in having been made redundant or facing consultations for redundancy. We have seen increasing numbers.

“I would say it has got worse over the last few months. I have noticed more people coming in saying they have lost their jobs and wondering what they are going to do.”

Many of the people who go to the CAB looking for help are seeking advice on the type of benefits to claim and trying to discover what they are entitled to upon redundancy. Ms Robinson said that many people were unaware of which benefits they would be able to claim.

Last week, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development predicted that unemployment was set to increase in 2012 and peak at around 2.9 million at the beginning of 2013.

Locally, redundancies were recently announced at Pinguin Foods in Marsh Lane in Boston.
