Unemployment up 17 per cent in 12 months

UNEMPLOYMENT in Boston has risen by 17 per cent in the past year, according to the latest statistics.

The number of people claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance (JSA) shot from 1,305 to 1,525 in the 12 months to December 2011. It now sits at 3.5 per cent - 0.2 per cent below the national average.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 9.6 per cent of those claiming JSA were aged between 18 and 24.

The overall amount increased by 55 people between November and December.
