Boston beat Stalybridge Celtic 5-0 at Bower Fold to book their place in the play-offs.

Mr Newton said: “Yesterday we were contacted by the Daily Mail regarding an article they intended publishing in respect of ‘irregular betting patterns’ surrounding Boston United’s last game of the season against Stalybridge Celtic.

“This came as a complete surprise to the club.

“Subsequent discussions with the FA revealed that some information had been provided to them and they were looking into that information.

“However, no formal investigation has been instigated.

“I confirmed to the FA that the club would fully co-operate with any investigations that may take place.”

The Daily Mail have reported that part of the probe will focus on whether any illegal betting patterns can be identified.

Boston dominated the match against their mid-table opponents and won 5-0 following a hat-trick from Dayle Southwell, plus goals from Jay Rollins and Grant Roberts.

In-form United went into the contest on the back of four wins and a draw.

Both Stalybridge and Boston have refuted the allegations.
