VIDEO: New-look Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire unveiled

Spitfire PS915 has been away from the flight for what is known as ‘major’ - a rough comparison would be an intensive service for a car.

And today (Friday) the aircraft was shown off for the first time at RAF Coningsby.

A spokesman for the flight said: “We take the opportunity at these times to re-paint the aircraft in a new scheme, you may know that each of our aircraft is painted to represent a significant person or aircraft, thus allowing us to pay a particular tribute to those who have served in the RAF in the past.

“Spitfire PS915 is now in an eye-catching silver scheme, to represent a Mk XIX Spitfire that was flown by Flight Lieutenant Ted Powles AFC in February 1952 to a height of 51,550 feet, a record-breaking altitude for a Spitfire.”
