VIDEO: Burst water pipe floods Boston Market Place - full story

A WATER pipe burst in Boston’s Market Place on Friday flooding a section for the afternoon and resulting in a loss of water to nearby businesses.

Water gushing from the pipe outside KFC and Edinburgh Woollen Mill sprayed up to five-feet in the air.

The story broke on The Standard’s website and prompted several light-hearted comments from onlookers.

One asked: “Have they got planning permission for this swimming pool?”

A passing bus driver commented: “That fountain would look nice with a statue of a mermaid next to it.”

The burst pipe happened during the £2 million regeneration work on the Market Place.

Lincolnshire County Council’s head of highways south Steve Willis explained that the incident occurred after one of the vehicles belonging to contractor Ringway clipped a cast iron cover which hit a main valve and burst the connection.

He added: “As soon as this unfortunate incident took place, we quickly looked to help the nearby businesses with any urgent needs they had, such as providing bottled water, and worked closely with Anglian Water to rectify the situation.”

Contracts manager at Ringway Bob Sutton said they would be repairing the damage and apologised to local residents and businesses.

He confirmed the driver had undergone a standard toxicology screen but added there was no reason to assume they were under the influence.
