VIDEO: Michaela Strachan opens new Boston lock

Friday, 3pm - TELEVISION presenter Michaela Strachan and Boston Mayor Coun Peter Bedford were among those on deck for the unveiling of the town's new £8.5 million waterways project.

Crowds lined the bank today (Friday) around London Road's Black Sluice Lock to see a small flotilla of boats sail through to mark the completion of the lock.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and Boston Canoe Club and Activities Away also took to the water to give demonstrations.

BAFTA award-winner Michaela described Boston's waterways as an 'amazing attraction'.

She said: "I think it's a very positive thing that gets people outdoors. It will encourage people who live such stressful lives in this country to get out. They work hard and long hours – people will be out to contrast that by getting outdoors."

Also on-board the flotilla as a VIP alongside Michaela was Jennifer Parker, of Boston's Carlton Road, who won The Standard's competition for a place.

The new lock opens up routes inaccessible to boaters for 40 years – and in doing so launch Europe's largest waterway regeneration scheme for two decades.

A Lincolnshire Waterways Partnership project, the scheme has been managed by the Environment Agency.

The Boston Lock project was funded by Lincolnshire County Council (4 million), the European Regional Development Fund (2.5 million) and the East Midlands Development Agency (2 million).
