Volunteers needed to keep an eye on North Sea Camp
Tuesday, 12.15pm - VOLUNTEERS are needed to help keep an eye on North Sea Camp in Freiston.
The open prison's Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) is appealing for new members.
The role would involve monitoring the day-to-day life of the site to ensure that proper standards are maintained.
Rod Crozier, the current vice chairman of the IMB at North Sea Camp, described it as 'a valuable and essential role in the community'.
"Quite simply, we are the eyes and ears of the Minister of Justice at the prison and we have to report annually on our findings," he said.
IMB members are required to check the prison premises are kept in order, that the administration is carried out correctly, and that the prisoners are treated humanely and with dignity.
Its members are unpaid, but travelling costs and some out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed.
Volunteers are required to give the equivalent of at least two to three days a month, but this can vary.
They are also required to attend local and national training to equip them to carry out the role.
If you are interested in the role, contact the board's clerk Kate Snell on 01205 769353.
