Romantic couple Marcus Kenning and Maria Whitaker will be pedalling around 270 miles to say ‘I do’.
The cycle-mad pair will be jumping on their bikes from their home in Main Road, Wrangle, on August 30 to reach the venue at Gretna Green in Scotland.
They both took up cycling seriously 18 months ago and Maria said at first the idea of pedalling to the wedding was ‘a bit of a joke.’
“We both like going on long cycle rides so the more we thought about it the more we decided it wasn’t a bad idea. We’ll be taking the back roads but there will be plenty of hills.”
Marcus joked: “We chose Gretna because cycling to Boston Stump would have been too small a distance.
“We will be heading off from Boston to Lincoln, then via Gainsborough, Goole, York, Ripon and up through the Yorkshire Dales. Then it’s onto Penrith in Cumbria, a night in Dalston near Carlisle and straight up to Gretna Green ready for the wedding on September 3. We could probably do the distance in two days but we’re planning three days to take our time.”
The couple, both in their 40s, regularly go on long cycle rides. Marcus recently completed the Prudential Ride in London, covering 86 miles (reduced from 100 miles due to bad weather).
They think nothing of cycling to York for the day and the weekend they return from their wedding Marcus is taking part in the Lincoln Grand Prix.
The rest of the wedding party will be taking the wedding dress, flowers and the rest of the outfits up by car.
Marcus, an engineering manager at Staples Vegetables, added: “If I had my way I’d get married in Lycra.”
The couple’s son Frank, six, will be pageboy with their daughter Grace, seven, and Maria’s daughter Rebecca, 19, as bridesmaids.
Marcus has raised £1,800 for the Make a Wish Foundation from the Prudential Ride. To add to the donations go to www.justgiving.com/marcus-kenning
