Work continues on Guildhall revamp
Updated: Thursday, November 16, 1pm: WORK continues to gather pace on Boston's medieval Guildhall, with council staff promising the refurbished museum will finally reopen next summer.
The latest addition to the 14th century building, which has been closed since 2003, is a specially-commissioned statue, crafted by a top-class sculptor to fill the empty niche on the Guildhall's west window.
The figurine is the work of Claire Curneen, an internationally-recognised ceramic artist who is senior lecturer at the Centre for Ceramic Studies in Cardiff. It was commissioned as part of the regional Museumaker project, a partnership programme involving nine museums across the East Midlands which aims to give craft-makers access to museum collections and buildings.
Barrie Higham, cultural services manager at Boston Borough Council, said: "We are very pleased that Boston is benefiting from the Museumaker project, alongside other larger museums such as Nottingham Castle. The sculpture will be a valuable addition to the newly-renovated Guildhall."
With the vast entanglement of scaffolding which has cloaked the building for much of the year finally removed, the Guildhall's newly-repaired roof is now visible.
The roof's south face, which is more visible from South Street, still retains its original medieval tiles, while the north face is now largely made up of new, specially commissioned, hand-made tiles.
Meanwhile, underfloor heating has now been installed in the Guildhall's ground floor – radiators having been deemed aesthetically inappropriate for a 600-year-old edifice – while other reparation and restoration works are still on schedule inside the building.
The borough council is planning to turn the building into a visitor attraction which will tell the rich story of Boston's history.
