Courtney Bowman beat off tough competition from 80 other musical theatre students around the UK to win the 2016 Sondheim Society student award.

The 21-year-old, who is currently in her final year at the Guildhall School of Acting, had to perform two musical songs in front of judges on the London stage to win the industry award and £1,000 prize.

“It was absolutely surreal to find out I’d won and I still can’t believe it,” said Courtney.

“Everything has been a bit of a whirlwind since, but I think it’s now time to get my feet back on the ground.”

The ex Boston High School pupil says she is now busy arranging auditions for stage shows - with the hopes of snagging a comedy musical role.

“I really admire and would love to work with Sheridan Smith and Jennifer Saunders. Both are fantastic in their comedy performances - but great with serious drama too.

“My favourite show has to be the Book of Mormon, which I’d love to be a part of. There are lots of profanities in that show, but it makes me howl.”

Courtney is an ex-member of local groups Boston Youth Jazz Orchestra, Dance Krazy, What Free Time youth theatre and the Allen School of Dance.

“They all helped me such a lot over the years, but it’s a real shame that there is very little support for the arts in schools nowadays,” she added.

“The ultimate goal for me now is just getting paid to be in the industry I love. That will be a mark of success for me.”
