A VEIL of secrecy surrounded today’s visit to Pilgrim Hospital by health minister Andrew Lansley.

The Secretary of State arrived on the site and was smuggled into the hospital through the service entrance to begin his visit this afternoon. It is understood that he was visiting the Accident and Emergency department, the maternity department and the intensive care unit during the trip.

Mr Lansley refused to speak to the press gathered at the hospital. A spokesman for the Department of Health said this was because there will be local elections taking place in other parts of the country.

A large number of police were on the site for the trip, which was described as a private visit at the invitation of Boston MP Mark Simmonds.
