Olympics for all arrive in Boston

THE Olympics are coming to town.

In the build-up to London 2012, four groups from our area will be celebrating Boston 2011 as they were handed £874 in sports grants.

Boston Silver Spoon Bowmen Archery Club, Swineshead Strollers Health Walk Group, Kirton Walking Group and Age UK Boston have all struck gold thanks to the Silver Spirit projec.

This aims to fund events for the over 50s inspired by the Games.

“Silver Spirit provides a great oportiunity for the older generation to get actively involved with the 2012 Games and run events inspired by the Olympics or Paralympics,” said Sarah Ferneyhough, physical activity manager at the Lincolnshire Sports Partnership.

The Bowmen were awarded £250 to purchase specialist archery equipment for participants aged 50 and over.

Members of Swineshead Strollers will each complete a marathon, walking, swimming, rowing or cycling 26.2 miles at their own pace in a local gym. A grant of £250 will aid this.

A £285 handout will help Kirton Walking Group organise a 25-mile Boston Torch Relay Health Walk from Swineshead to Old Leake, for all health walk groups in the area.

The money will help fund a torch which will be made by local people with learning disabilities.

Age UK received £178 to share with Age UK South Holland to stage mini Olympic events including floor basketball and new-age kurling.
