LETTER: Toilets? You couldn’t make it up if you tried...

You couldn’t make it up if you tried.

A question was asked at a recent Boston Town Area Committee (BTAC) meeting about the proposed refurbishment of the public toilets saying how they were currently unsuitable for use by disabled people. Surprisingly the answer came back acknowledging that the public toilets are very poor and we were pleased to hear that there was a plan to refurbish them.

However, we were shocked to hear that the council had totally forgotten its responsibilities under the 2010 Equality Act which obligates them to consult with disabled people when providing services specifically for disabled people. The work had already been put out to tender, but following this discussion at BTAC, a discussion took place with local disabled people and the work was started on May 6.

It still begs the question however –does Boston Borough Council need to train all of its staff and councillors regarding their responsibilities and duties to disabled people?

Time and time again their negligence shines out on access issues.
