AN otter has been found dead in an illegal eel net in Stonebridge Drain, in Sibsey.
Residents living near the drain spotted the protected animal caught up in the net over the weekend and it was removed from the water on Monday.
The Environment Agency is now urging anglers to be vigilant against eel nets and report them if they see them during the closed season, which runs until the end of the month.
Phil Smith, Environment Agency biodiversity officer, said: “The police have been informed of this illegal fishing activity and if investigations lead to finding who set the net, a prosecution will follow.”
