Police say dog napper rumours are an ‘urban myth’

Police have issued advice over reports on social media claiming a dog napper is operating in the Donington area.

Online comments made over the weekend suggested chalk marks had been left on gate posts in the village to identify target properties to burglars or dog-thieves.

Community Inspector Jim Tyner said there had been no reported dog thefts in the area.

“This is an urban myth that regularly pops up,” he said.

“Please be careful when reading such info on social media sites as myths and rumours can quickly get out of hand and cause unnecessary fear for vulnerable members of the community.”
