THE busy maternity unit at Pilgrim Hospital closed twice during 2011 it has been revealed at a meeting of county councillors.
The Health Scrutiny Committee for Lincolnshire was given a presentation on maternity services for United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust at a meeting on Wednesday.
Chairman Coun Christine Talbot said the committee was ‘encouraged’ to hear about the processes followed before deciding to close a maternity unit.
She added: “These decisions are not taken lightly, and fortunately there have been no such closures at Lincoln County Hospital and Boston Pilgrim Hospital this year.”
The trust also said it faced challenges from the migrant population, high maternal obesity, holidaymakers and the rural county.
However it reassured councillors that ULHT was working with other agencies and had had no further closures during 2012.
