The opening of Boston’s new £750,000 footbridge has inspired three cheeky Twitter accounts dedicated to bridges in Boston.

The replacement St Botoloph’s Bridge opened to pedestrians on Tuesday but by that time it already had a presence on the social networking site.

The account (@thebostonbridge) began tweeting on Saturday with the message: “Sorry, I’m not open yet. Don’t worry you should be able to walk all over from me later this week - can’t wait!”

Further tweets then included: “What a day! Overwhelmed with all the lovely folk who have walked over me today. Those mobility scooters are heavier than I thought, though!”

And: “Hi @bostonunited Just moved into town. Any chance of getting a replica shirt - I’m a bit bigger than your average fan!”

However as the week moved on the bridge attracted competition, firstly with a Town Bridge account (@townbridgereal).

It tweeted: “Beware of false idols! Who is this @thebostonbridge? #rubbishbridge” and added: “class is permanent! come back when you can take a double decker Brylaine! #wussbridge”

The bizarre exchanges then got stranger when the pair of tweeting bridges were joined by Sluice Bridge (@sluicebridge).

That joined in with: ”I’m the best bridge in Boston! #FACT” and added: “That @TownBridgeReal has just followed me! I think he’s scared of a far better bridge!”

There’s no word yet on whether the Haven Bridge will follow its tweeting counterparts or the identities of the people behind the mischievious accounts.
