A happy couple from Kirton have celebrated 60 years of marriage with a trip to the coast and a surprise party with their family.

John and Sylvia Hirst, of Franks Close, first met in 1951 outside the cinema in Boston and got chatting.

John, 84, originally from the Sheffield area, was stationed at RAF Coningsby at the time, while Sylvia, 80, lived in Frampton.

Asked what the secret to a long, happy marriage is, John joked: ‘It’s saying ‘yes, dear’,” adding, “We just get on really well.”

Sylvia’s advice is for ‘a bit of give and take’ in relationships and to ‘have your own interests’.

The pair married at Frampton Church on September 19, 1955.

They have two children, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

They celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with five days in Scarborough – and a surprise meal out with their family.
