Youngsters at a school in Gipsey Bridge have witnessed the start of a new era, as the site became an academy earlier this month.

Gipsey Bridge Academy was officially launched in a special assembly at the school on February 1, where the move was celebrated by the unveiling of a panoramic canvas showing every pupil and member of staff.

The move has been made in a bid to allow the school community to take control of the way it works and provide the best education for its pupils, it said.

School spokesman Briony Czornookyj told The Standard: “The decision to move to academy status was taken in order to allow the school to take control of its own destiny, both financially and in terms of the curriculum.”

All pupils have been presented with PE bags emblazoned with the new academy logo.

The academy, on Castledyke Bank, has now become the lead school in the Isis Academies Trust, which also runs a site in the north of Sheffield called Greengate Lane Academy.

A number of schools in and around Boston have now made the move to academy status.
