There was little sunshine in August for Boston

BOSTON was short of sunshine in August with just five days of sun according to the town’s weatherman Albert Kirkham.

Albert Kirkham said the weather here was ‘fine, warm, and very warm for most days until the last six days when the temperature fell well below average to give ‘a very cool end to the month’.

The highest maximum temperature, on the 2nd and 3rd, was 28.3C (83F). The lowest maximum temperature recorded on the 26th was 15C (59F).

On the 3rd and 13th, the temperature fell no lower than 16.1C (61F) but on the 18th it was as low as 7.8C (46F).

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 21.7C (70.6F) slightly above the average 21.1C (70.3F) for August.

The mean minimum was 12.2C (53.9F) above the average of 11.7C (52.8F).

The town had slightly more rainfall than usual, with 56.5mm (2.22ins) against the average of 55.8mm (2.20ins) across 18 days of measurable rain. The greatest rainfall in one day came on the 24th with 16.8mm (0.66ins).

Townspeople enjoyed just 173 hours of bright sunshine in August, less than the average of 211 hours. The sunniest day was on the 9th, with 11.7 hours.

There were two days of thunderstorms and three days with no sunshine at all.
