A couple from Kirton got engaged at the Gliderdrome on the weekend - in the exact spot where they shared their first kiss.
Tom Bussey first met Natalie Affection at a T-Rex tribute concert held in the music venue earlier this year – and he surpised her on Sunday by taking her back to the exact spot and proposing on one knee.
“It was a total surprise to her as I had said we were going to the Glider to meet her mum from bingo,” said Tom, 27. “I took her back to the spot where we shared out first kiss outside. I’m so happy she said yes.”
The chance meeting was a real medical marvel for Tom, who was on a night out with friends from the ambulance station where he works when he met nurse Natalie, 28, who is based at the Pilgrim Hospital.
“Everyone is so pleased for us,” he added: “Family and friends are really surprised as they didn’t know I was going to propose.”
The Gliderdrome celebrated its 50th anniversary last week - and over the decades it became a popular spot for couples to meet their future partners.
Many flocked to the iconic Starlight Rooms during its rock ‘n’ roll heydays to see stars such as Elton John, T-Rex, Brenda Lee, Manfred Mann and The Animals.
“Natalie’s grandparents used to enjoy going to the Gliderdrome back in the day,” said Tom,
Andrew Malkinson, whose family own the dance venue, said: “So many people have met at the Glider and gone on to get married and have families over the years.
“You pick up the paper now and in the wedding anniversary announcements you still read about people meeting at the Glider.
“It’s just nice that the tradition is continuing. Hopefully, there’ll be more to come in the future.”
Mr Malkinson has given the pair tickets to the Glider’s New Year’s Eve do so they can see in 2015 at the venue which brought them together,
They plan to marry at Frampton Church in 2016.
