Right turn ban go ahead
THE proposed right turn ban for motorists turning from Boston’s Sleaford Road into Brothertoft Road is to go ahead.
Lincolnshire County Council’s (LCC) Highways Department has confirmed the ‘no right turn’ trial will begin on Sunday, February 26.
When the proposed right turn ban was announced last year, a petition was set up in opposing the plans, with more than 100 signatures.
But LCC says the move will ‘help to keep motorists moving in Boston’.
The experimental ban will last for a period of six months, but the council says this will become permanent if the trial is successful.
Jonathan Wickham, senior project Leader at LCC, said: “This marks the culmination of a number of initiatives to help keep people on the move in the town.
“Traffic is already moving more freely following improvements to widen the road and level crossings on the A16 and A52.”
Mr Wickham said the traffic flow will be monitored closely throughout the six month period to measure the impact of the right turn ban on surrounding roads. A decision will then be made about whether it should be permanent or not.
“Motorists should find they get through the junction more quickly as vehicles won’t be backed up, waiting for others to turn right. We’re also extending the length of the two lane approach to the junction eastbound on Sleaford Road.” he said.
He added: “We’ll have clear signs in place to tell drivers to use Lister Way, known locally as the Asda Link, Fydell Street and Argyle Street instead.”
The move forms part of LCC’s joint £10 million Boston Transport Strategy with Boston Borough Council.
As well as the main A16 and A52 widening scheme, previous completed schemes include the removal of traffic lights from the Liquorpond and Wide Bargate roundabouts, improvements at the junction of Spilsby Road with Freiston Road, enhancement of bus facilities, including the IntoTown bus service, and other improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.
