Plans to install a bus stop on London Road in Wyberton have been met with disbelief – as it will be the ninth stop within a half-mile radius.

Lincolnshire County Council has started setting up a stop outside 278 London Road, despite the fact that people living nearby say it is unwanted and completely unnecessary.

They claim that if the council has to put in a stop, it should be further down the road, where there has been an unofficial pick-up point for years, yet work has now started on the site which no-one wants.

Mark Cleaver, who lives next door to the new stop, said: “We didn’t know anything about it. It was meant to be at 270, where they has always been a stop.

“Even though that is there I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone at it.

“It seems a bit of an over-kill when there are about eight within a half-mile radius. It’s never going to be used.

“It’s being put there for no reason whatsoever and it’s just a waste of money.”

Work on the stop has been halted after workmen hit a gas main.

Wyberton Parish councillor Don Ransome said the saga began several years ago, when a resident of Delfied Road requested more bus stops on London Road.

The parish council suggested the spot outside 270, but the county council said it would be dangerous and moved the site up the road.

A spokesman for the county council said it was felt there was a need for a bus stop in this location, which was considered safer.
