Children have spoken out about the dangers they face on roads near their schools – due to inconsiderate parking by some parents.

Pupils at St Mary’s School, in Ashlawn Drive, and nearby Tower Road Academy, in Tower Road, have written a letter to parents urging them to be more considerate.

Children’s safety is our utmost priority and we spend a lot of time in schools and after-school clubs delivering road safety talks to students so they know how to cross a road safely.

Hazards students face there every day include not being seen by oncoming traffic when attempting to cross the road – due to the number of vehicles parked there.

The youngsters are working with Boston Town East Neighbourhood Policing Team to drive the message home.

Pcso Naomi Newell explained: “Children’s safety is our utmost priority and we spend a lot of time in schools and after-school clubs delivering road safety talks to students so they know how to cross a road safely.

“It is vital that parents play their part by respecting the safety zones outside the schools. If cars are parked on junctions and bends this can
obscure vision and also prevent other drivers seeing children come out from in between cars. The yellow lines have been put in place outside of schools for a reason.

“Please make the most of the upcoming summer weather and, where possible cycle or walk into school, or park a little bit further away and cycle or walk the last few minutes.

“Every little helps and will help reduce the traffic flow and parking issues. By us all working together we can help keep our children safer.”

St Mary’s school recently opened a new school entrance on the other side of the school – in an attempt to curb traffic issues there.

The police team put up new warning signs outside the gates of each school.

It reads: “No waiting! No parking! No excuse! Don’t put our children’s lives at risk. Yellow lines are there for a reason. Please park in a safe and legal manner”.

LETTER: From pupils to parking parents...

Dear parents, we are writing to you to ask you to be safe around our school.

Firstly, we would like you to think about parking, in our car park and on the roads. Talking about car parks, not every school has one so please use it correctly. Please park in the bays and be aware of other drivers and children. Also, please stay off the yellow zig-zag lines and the double yellow lines because there are lots of children around our gates. Slow down outside our school gates – you have no idea how many injuries going fast could cause. Finally, if you can, please walk, bike or ‘park and stride’ to school as this would limit the traffic outside. Yours sincerely Beth, Oscar, Niamh and Charlotte -
The Junior Road Safety Officers,
Tower Road Academy.
