UPDATE TUESDAY: 10.30AM: Spalding house fire deaths not suspicious, say police

Police have just confirmed they are not treating the weekend's fatal fire in Spalding as suspicious. The victims of the fire were three adult males but formal identifications have not yet taken place.

A file for the coroner will be prepared in due course.

UPDATE MONDAY 9AM: Spalding house fire death toll rises to three

Police have confirmed this morning that a third body has been found at the scene of a house fire in Spalding.

The fire broke out at a house in Tower Lane, off Cowbit Road, Spalding, just after midnight on Sunday.

Two bodies were discovered at the house by police and firefighters yesterday, but now a third fatality has been revealed by police today.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “It has not been safe for investigators to enter the building and the cause of the fire is still not known.

“A joint fire service and police investigation continues.

“We are in the process of identifying the deceased and tracing next of kin.

“It is unlikely that any further information will be available today.”

A fire engine and a tarpaulin have been positioned across the entrance to Tower Lane as police and fire investigators probe the cause of the blaze.

Just behind the fire engine, the outline of a specially erected tent can be glimpsed across the river by those passing along Spalding’s London Road.

A 200 yard stretch of Cowbit Road, including the entrances to Westbourne Gardens and Tower Lane, remains sealed off and there are emergency vehicles along the length of the road closure.

10am Sunday: Two people have died in a house fire in Spalding described by one witness as a “towering inferno”.

The fire was discovered at a property in Tower Lane, off Cowbit Road, shortly after midnight this morning (Sunday, May 1).

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: “Sadly, we can confirm that there have been two fatalities.

“We are not in a position to provide any further details about the deceased at this stage and the cause of the fire is not yet known. A joint fire service and police investigation is underway.

“If anyone has any information they believe may assist the enquiry, they should call 101, quoting incident number 3 of 1st May.”

In the early hours of this morning there were fire crews from Spalding, Crowland, Holbeach, Market Deeping, Kirton and Boston fighting the fire.

A specialist aerial appliance was called in from Boston.

Around midnight police were knocking on doors warning residents they may have to be evacuated.

One resident in Westbourne Gardens, whose home overlooks the Tower Lane house, said flames had gripped the entire width of the roof at that time and described the scene as a “towering inferno”.

Neighbours we spoke to this morning were unaware the fire had claimed two lives.

One neighbour believed the house was in multiple occupany with people from the East European community living there.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue used three main jets to tackle the blaze.

Firefighters using an aerial platform were still damping down all that remained of the house roof after 10am today.

The first mention of the fire from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue came in a Tweet at 12.05am today.

At around 2.30pm today, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said it had specialist teams in attendance to ensure the safety of fire-damaged house.

• Emergency services are still on the scene and Cowbit Road is closed to through traffic as the investigation into the cause of the fire gets underway.
