THE parents of a young girl with dwarfism are holding an event in the hope of raising awareness of the condition.
Laura and Carl Ward, of Donington, will be marking Dwarfism Awareness Month, currently only held in the USA, with an event at Donington Community Centre.
Laura said: “We are trying to make the month an international event.
“It’s to get to the people to ask questions about the condition and raise awareness of it.”
The free day on October 13 will include stalls and games from 10am-5pm and a disco from 6-11pm.
Laura said she launched her campaign last year after enduring funny looks and sideways glances every time she went out with six-year-old daughter Jessica.
Laura said: “We were fed up with people staring and whispering, we’d rather them come up to our face and ask what’s wrong or ‘my boys staring can you explain please?”
Since then they have had a busy 10 months meeting people in similar positions and attending events organised by the Restricted Growth Association and Little People UK, even meeting and befriending founder and celebrity Warwick Davies.
Carl said: “It was a an eye-opener. She was six when we went and all we had met were two others with different types of the condition and then there were more than a hundred.”
The family are looking for donations and for stall holders to take part.
