LETTER: Alvin Stardust death brought back memories of the Glider

The recent death of Alvin Stardust will have brought back many happy memories for older Bostonians as in the early Sixties he appeared on many occasions as Shane Fenton, backed by the Fentones at the Gliderdrome. He quickly became very popular and when the teenage dances began on Friday nights in October 1960 he and the band almost became a fixture, playing regularly on both Fridays and Saturdays.

He quickly went on to other things before emerging – more by chance than anything else – as Alvin Stardust and appeared at a Thursday night dance at the Starlight Room almost 40 years later in October 2000.

It was my privilege to meet him after that show and he was quick to fondly remember his early days at the ‘old’ Glider and Ernest and Sydney Malkinson. He was a lovely man and introduced me and my wife to his wife Julie and said how pleased they were to have just found out Julie was having a daughter who they would name Millie (now 14).

He had no airs and graces and was only too pleased to sign a photo of Shane Fenton and the Fentones from the Sixties for a fan – signing as Shane and Alvin Stardust.

A true gentleman who will be missed by many pop fans.
