Boston Labour councillors were delighted to read that private landlords who rent homes to illegal immigrants could be fined up to £3,000 per individual, under government proposals published recently.

Boston Labour councillors were delighted to read that private landlords who rent homes to illegal immigrants could be fined up to £3,000 per individual, under government proposals published recently.

The consultation on plans to force private landlords to check the immigration status of tenants says the £3,000 fine would be reserved for repeat offenders, with lower penalties for those who make an ‘honest mistake’.

The consultation is open until August 21. The measures that result from it will be brought in through the government’s Immigration Bill.

Boston Labour Councillors welcome any measures that aim to improve the lives of people living in private accommodation. So we hope that this new initiative will have impacts on properties in Boston and look forward to hearing from Boston Borough Council that they have told the secretary of state for local government and communities that they are fully committed to this enforcement.
