With reference to the article in The Standard with a photo of Coun Yvonne Gunter and the letter received from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth referring to the Jubilee Fountain.

May I inform you that I also received a personal letter and commemorative card from Her Majesty? This was as a result of me sending her a magazine with photos of her taken in Aden in 1954. Let me explain further.

I am an army veteran who has the honour of producing and editing a journal, called the The Dhow for all Aden Veterans’ Association Members throughout the world. The stories told are sometimes more than 50 years old, many with accompanying photos, and makes some good reading for our members as they bring back many memories of their time in the protectorate, as it was at that time, some good and some not so good as we lost many comrades, which the general public were sometimes not made aware of as much as they are today.

Her Majesty had been visiting the Aden Protectorate to lay a commemorative stone at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Steamer Point, Aden, on April 27, 1954. She wrote thanking me for reminding her of her visit to Aden.

You can imagine how thrilled and honoured I was to receive this reply on behalf of all the veterans.

I belong to The Fenland Branch of the AVA and we hold Sunday lunches once a month to keep in touch with one another, as well as taking part in events throughout the country.
