LETTER: What is that awful humming sound?

I live in Boston and I am wondering what it is that I hear every night which wakes me up, it is a whining drone, that is constant and invasive.

I hear it in the daytime too, but the everyday sounds of a normal working day hide the impact of it.

In the silence of night time it seems to fill every room in my home, and no, it is not electrical, water pipes, computer or gas pipes.

Neither is it tinnitus, which I have had for most of my life. This is different, it is an extraneous and insidious noise that ear plugs will not hide and once tuned in to it, sleep is impossible.

It seems to resonate in the walls and echo everywhere. Having looked on the internet, it seems the ‘hum’ is a problem endured by people all over the world, and those who are susceptible believe it to be related to low frequency signals from mobile phones and broadband.

If anyone else endures this and can pinpoint the noise or offer a reasonable explanation I would be most grateful. I really need an uninterrupted eight hours sleep which I have not had for months!
