Published Date: 10 July 2008
Thursday, 2.15pm - THE Boston and District Saturday Football League has increased its membership to 35 clubs – 52 teams – which now makes it the biggest open-age Saturday league in the county.
The announcement was made at the annual meeting of the league, sponsored by Cropley's Suzuki.

Five new clubs were elected. Boston Town Old Boys FC and Eastville, Midville and New Leake FC and Sportsman FC joined the league while former team Holbeach St Marks FC returned.

Pointon FC joined up from the Grantham League while Woodhall Spa United have now entered a reserve side.

The league constitution saw Kirton Town F.C. promoted into the Premier Division to bring the Division up to 12 strong and their decision was warmly applauded by the other clubs.

Pointon FC were placed in Division One and Sportsman FC placed into Division Two.

The other new teams will all begin in Division Three.

The meeting also saw presentations of two new trophies.

One – Secretary of the Year – was given in memory of long-serving treasurer Alf Stones, who passed away towards the end of 2006.

This award was presented by Alf's eldest son David, who thought it very appropriate that the first award should go to somebody who had started in football administration at about the same time as his father.

The recipient was Fred Hunt, secretary of Park United FC, from Carrington.

It was a double celebration for Park United as they were also winners of the inaugural Eric Johnson Memorial Trophy, presented to the team with the best disciplinary record.

Graham and Mark Johnson reminded the meeting of their father's clean playing record, having never been cautioned or sent off.

The Referee of the Year Award went to a new ref, David Bent.

A special presentation was made to retiring referee Trevor Page, who was hanging up his boots after 48 years.

Trevor had officiated at the highest possible level, including the 1979 international fixture between East Germany and Poland.

The next presentations were to the league's leading goalscorers.

The Premier Division award went to Michael Gardner (Wyberton FC, 13 goals) and the Division One award to Dean Seiner (Freiston FC), who topped the Division Two charts last season.

Andy Brown (Fosdyke, 35) won the Division Two award and the Division Three award went to Neil Featherstone (Wyberton Reserves, 38),
The referees' match fee has increased to £16 and their travelling expenses have gone up to 30p per mile.

Clubs will be allowed to e-mail their match reports, subject to each club agreeing a suitable template with the league secretary, Neil Johnson.

The season will start on August 30 and run all the way through until the final day, which will be May 16.
