Boston United 2 Altrincham 3: Lightning strikes twice for the Robins

Boston's Gary Silk gives chase.

Boston United suffered a 3-2 defeat to Altrincham on Saturday, in a game which saw all five goals scored within a crazy 18-minute spell.

The Robins proved that lightning does strike twice, after leaving York Street with their second victory of the campaign.

This contest did not have the controiversy of Altrincham’s 3-1 FA Cup victory - where United’s Spencer Weir-Daley and Ben Fairclough both saw red - but once again the Cheshire side proved superior.

Boston manager Jason Lee rang the changes, dropping keeper Dan Haystead.

But replacement Ricky Drury could do nothing but watch as Shaun Densmore’s free kick beat him, but crashed against the Pilgrims’ crossbar during a goalless first half.

But After the break, Damian Reeves fired the visitors ahead in the 49th minute after Drury had stopped Duncan Watmore’s strike.

However, Boston pulled level within two minutes as Marc Newsham slipped home his 17th of the season, after latching on to Ian Ross’ Clever through ball.

And Weir-Daley almost put United in front, but a fine save from Stuart Coburn denied him.

Reeves grabbed his second of the afternoon with a simple close-range header in the 59th minute before Nicky Clee did what he had done on the FA Cup clash, finding the net from the edge of the penalty area with a powerful 66th-minute drive.

United were down, but not out and Kallum Smith gave them some hope by scoring his first goal for the club.

With 22 minutes remaining, he forced Newsham’s effort goalwards, the referee’s assistant ruling the ball had crossed the line.

Smith almost drew his side level with a strike which hit the Robins’ crossbar, but Clee did likewise at the other end as Alty took the points.
