Contract talks are on hold, but Boston United players '˜love this club' - Greene

Although Boston United are putting contract discussions on hold until the end of the campaign, the Pilgrims boss reckons recruitment won’t be a tough task.

Greene says he won’t talk about next year until the final ball has been kicked, as he doesn’t want to cause any unrest in the camp before the end of a term where promotion remains on the agenda.

“It’s difficult as we don’t know what division we’ll be in next year yet,” he said.

“If I start saying to one or two of them about contracts, we’ve got other ones asking ‘why haven’t you sorted me out?’ and there could be a bit of disruption.

“It’s probably best to leave it. At the end of the season I’ll speak to them and sort out next season.”

With Dayle Southwell scoring more than 50 goals in less than two seasons with the Pilgrims, it is feared that higher-level clubs may come sniffing around.

However, due to the forward being younger than 23 the club could still demand a fee were he to move on, and if that couldn’t be settled a tribunal would be arranged.

Greene, however, is confident his players are in the best place to continue developing.

He added: “I think they’ll all want to stay anyway. You’ve got to remember that Boston’s a big club.

“If they’ve got full time jobs, where are they going to play football for a bigger club than this without having to leave home and leave their job?

“Do they really want to do that?

“They love the club, the way the fans turn up in numbers for every game.

“There’s always a great atmosphere. They love that side of it. Of course they appreciate that.”

Former Boston United player-manager Albert Phelan has passed away at the age of 70.

He served the Pilgrims between 1977 and 1980, having made 390 appearances for Chesterfield, and led United to fourth place in the Alliance Premier League and the semi-finals of the FA Trophy in 1979-1980.
