Kalern Thomas joined Boston United after taking advice from Pilgrims old boy Spencer Weir-Daley

The right back shared a dressing room with former Pilgrims Ben Milnes, Greg Mills and Weir-Daley at Corby Town last season, and their high praise of the Jakemans Stadium club ensured that he wasn’t going to say no when Dennis Greene picked up the phone.

Thomas and Weir-Daley - who goes by the nickname Swizz - both live in Leicester, and United’s new recruit admitted he took particular notice of the advice dished out by the man who scored 66 times in Boston colours.

“They were all talking about Boston to me,” Thomas said. “They said it’s a big club, and told me what it’s all about.

“They told me it’s a big club to be at, but a welcoming club as well.

“I know Swizz well and he’s only got good things to say about the place.

“I know all about the goals he’s scored, he’s told me all about them.

“But when anyone tells you good things about something you want to go there and see what it’s all about.”

Although the Steelmen were relegated from the National League North last season, Thomas’ performances did enough to earn him his move to Boston.

And he says that his year at this level has put him in a better position for this season.

“Of course, I played at this level last year and learnt loads,” he added.

“There were loads of guys who played at that level and higher teaching me about how to play the game and positioning.

“I enjoyed last season and played pretty well, I think that got me the move to Boston.

“Knowing what to expect when you go to grounds will definitely help me settle better.”
