Boston boxer will fight for Britain this weekend

Thursday, 3pm - AMATEUR boxer Callum Johnson will be enjoying the pinnacle of his fledgling career when he represents Great Britain for the first time this weekend.

Callum, from Benington, was taking part in a training camp in Ireland this week when he was unexpextadly called up to fight for Britain at the Four Nations Challenge on Saturday and Sunday in Sheffield.

The event will see British boxers competing against the finest fighters from China, Kazakhstan and France.

Callum, 24, said: "It is the first time I will be Boxing in the Great Britain colours and it really is the pinnacle of my career so far.

"Representing Great Britain has been a lifelong goal and to achieve it now makes me so pleased."

Callum has steadily climbed the British light-heavyweight rankings in recent years but his call-up for the prestigious British squad still came as a surprise.

He said: "I was training in Ireland and I was supposed to be there until Friday but I got the call. I'm really looking forward to it.

"I'm a bit nervous and it's a bit short notice but I've been training hard. Come fight night I will be ready and raring to go."

"I believe the Chinese guy (Zhang Xiaoping) is the Olympic champion - what a result that would be to turn him over."

Callum has already qualified for the Commonwealth Games where he will represent Scotland, whom he is elligible to box for through a grandmother.

He qualified in some style in some style, finishing up with two golds and a silver from his three qualifying events.

But, like the rest of the Scotland squad, he has not yet been officially named in the squad.

He said: "I am in training for the Commonwealth Games and this weekend is an added bonus.

"The whole Scotland team has not been nominated yet but I don't think it should be too long until we get to know. I'm just planning my training as if I'm going and waiting for that final call."

Callum is guaranteed at least one fight on Saturday and more on Sunday depending on his success.
