Boston United win the Lincs Senior Shield... but manager Scott blasts performance
Wednesday, 8.45am - ROB Scott lifted his first silverware as Boston United manager… before declaring his side are more scared of themselves than any opponents.
Shaun Pearson's second-half header earned the Pilgrims a 1-0 win over Grantham in the Lincolnshire Senior Shield final last night.
It was a victory that has seen United win their last eight matches, claiming a total of 11 wins from their previous 12 contests.
"We're starting to believe we can go as long as possible," said Scott, talking about the club's best run in 32 years.
"Earlier on in the season they may have been doubting themselves, but the only people who can beat them right now is themselves.
"Silly mistakes could cost us, otherwise we're looking too strong."
Centre back Pearson's eighth goal of the campaign was enough to grant the Pilgrims the trophy at the Meeres Stadium, nodding home at the back post after connecting with Jamie Yates' corner.
Aaron Butcher, making a rare start in the Boston goal, received two let offs as the Gingerbreads twice struck the woodwork, also seeing James Cullingworth clear of the line in stoppage time.
In what can only be described as a boring game, Scott was left describing his side's success as a hollow victory.
He continued: "It was a poor night on the pitch, but sometimes if you're not playing well and winning games then something can be said for that.
"It was a hollow victory as the performance poor.
"We gave them a game plan and they took it literally. Sometimes we need to change a game, just need to flick a switch sometimes.
"We don't necessarily mean a moment of brilliance but just getting a foot on the ball and playing it."
United were left sweating over Adam Millson after the midfielder limped off on crutches midway through the second half.
For more Boston United news keep logging on throughout the day.
But early indications suggest the player – who has played just five times since breaking his leg last campaign – has a swollen ankle and should be fit to return soon.
