Brief encounter
Wednesday, 8.50am - BOSTON United are consulting their lawyers after Northwich Victoria were successful in an appeal to avoid the chop from the Blue Square Leagues.
Pilgrims chairman David Newton has called in his briefs to look through the case – feeling Northwich were treated differently to Boston, who were unsuccessful 12 months earlier.
"Our solicitors are looking into it and if we feel we have grounds to approach the FA to clarify the differences between the two cases, we will," Newton told The Standard.
"We are asking for the full details of the appeal before we decide whether to take this any further."
The Vics, relegated from the Blue Square Premier at the end of last season, faced the boot from the Blue Square North (BSN) because the Football Conference was unwilling to accept their registration due to
financial problems.
At last week's appeal, the FA agreed to reinstate Northwich into the BSN, although they will begin the campaign with a 10-point deduction.
This is in stark contrast to Boston United whose appeal to the FA – after the Football Conference decided to axe them from the BSN – fell on deaf ears, forcing them to suffer demotion to the UniBond Premier.
Newton added: "If what I've read is right then the FA seem to be saying appendices haven't been correctly incorporated in the rules of the Conference.
"That's what we argued last year – and they didn't accept that when we argued that."
Boston were demoted to the UniBond Premier because they failed to leave their company voluntary agreement before the league's cut-off date, the second Saturday in May.
The club left the CVA just days later with Newton believing the club had been punished for little more than correcting its finances.
Newton was looking forward to leaving the past behind him, hoping new managers Paul Hurst and Rob Scott could bring some glory back to the club.
But the FA's decision has dragged up ill feeling.
"I still feel really aggrieved about what happened last year anyway," Newton admitted.
"It was difficult to accept – but if it seems things are different for another club this year then we have to look at that.
"We want to move forward and forget about the past, but now there seems to be a situation where Northwich could have been dealt with differently to us.
"We have to look at the situation properly, but we won't go throwing money away which could be used elsewhere at the club to prove a point.
"It would have to be the right thing."
