Boston Cricket Club rebuilding begins with Hegarty arrival
TOM Baxter’s first role as Boston Cricket Club captain will be to replace three departing players.
Baxter took over as First XI captain from Paul Timby last year.
After the club punched above their weight to finish third in the Lincs ECB last year, the new skipper is confident he can guide the Mayflower men to another successful season.
But first he has to replace Elliot Wilson, Matt Ward and Josh Newton.
Former List A bowler and club coach Wilson claimed 30 First XI wickets for Boston last season.
But work commitments have seen him leave for the Isle of Wight.
Ward was last year’s overseas player.
The Australian scored 1206 runs during his 39-match stint in the northern hemisphere, representing both the Saturday and Sunday XIs.
But as Ward will not return for a second season, Baxter says he will again look overseas to fill the batsman-wicketkeeper void.
Newton’s absence comes as a shock the Boston, who expected him to return for the 2012 campaign.
However, he has joined home-town club Spalding,who play in the South Lincs and Border League Division One.
Baxter told The Standard: “Josh felt that he could not commit to Boston for the 2012 season due to work and personal issues.
“Over the two-and-a-half years he has spent at Boston, he has shown great potential of becoming a very good Premier League cricketer.
“Our loss is Spalding’s gain.”
Baxter’s first contest in charge of the First XI will be against Gateshead Fell as part of a pre-season tour of Newcastle in early April.
And the all-rounder is excited by the challenge.
“I have captained the Sunday First XI for a number of years and have really enjoyed it,” Baxter added.
“It has always been an ambition of mine to captain the First XI.
“Big credit must go to Paul Timby for what he has done for the three years he has been skipper at Boston Cricket Club.”
Paul, who left the captaincy vacant after he stepped up to fill Wilson’s shoes as club coach, will continue to play for the Firsts, which is something Baxter was happy about.
“His leadership and experience will be vital and having him around the side will help me to settle in as captain,” he continued.
Boston’s Second XI will be competing in the South Lincs and Border Divison Two, under the new leadership of Luke Gilding, who has aims of gaining promotion at the first attempt.
With Friskney joining the South Lincs and Border League, a few of last year’s Second XI players have joined them in Division Three.
Division Three is where Boston ThirdsI will be playing, under third new captain Kev Manning.
