Cully: "I was OTT - but you started it"

Wednesday, 4pm - JAMES Cullingworth has admitted he was 'over the top' with his post-match celebrations which sparked last-night's brawl at Cannon Park… but reckons he behaved no worse than the Badgers did at York Street.

As the final whistle blew, Cullingworth, a second-half sub, celebrated in front of the home team's dug-out with his arms aloft.

This caused Retford manager Peter Duffield to charge out of his technical area and grab the defender, setting both sets of players into action.

Speaking to The Standard with a large cut across his face, Cullingworth said: "There was a bit of a ruckus and I don't know where it came from.

"I think their manager tried to grab me from behind. But it's only a cut.

"I went a little bit over the top with the celebrations, but emotions were running high. We won 2-1 so I feel I can celebrate."

Looking back at Retford's 1-0 victory at York Street earlier this campaign, Cullingworth added: "They did exactly the same to us when they won 1-0. A few of their players were chanting in our faces and cheering our fans – so we made it 1-1 as far as I'm concerned."

Boston and Retford could still face one another in the UniBond Premier play-offs, or the UniBond Challenge Cup final.

United travel to face Curzon Ashton on Saturday, while Retford are up against Kendal Town.

Cullingworth added: "It'll be interesting whoever we play.

"Our main aim is to beat Curzon and reach the final. There we will just concentrate on playing whoever's in front of us."

Last night's victory saw United move four points clear of third-placed Retford and within a point of leaders Bradford Park Avenue.

Cullingworth, whose side have won six straight matches, reckons the pressure is now on Bradford to win their two games in hand.

He added: "It was an excellent win for us. We've pulled out a bit of a gap in second now and we're hunting Bradford down.

"They've got to win their games in hand to go clear so it's a good position for us."
