BOSTON United missed out on their first chance of silverware this season - after losing the Lincs Senior Shield final to Stamford on penalties.

Jason Lee mixed up his first-team fringe players and reserves for the contest against the Evo-Stike Division One South opponents.

And it was a decision that cost United dear as they underperformed over the goalless 90 minutes and struck three poor spot kicks.

Boston were gifted the chance to open the scoring on 14 minutes after Ben Sedgemore handles Micket Stones’ header.

But from the spot, Stones smashed his effort against the bottom of Chris Wright’s right-hand post.

In a game of few chances, Jason Lee and exciting substitute Liam Ogden missed the best chances for the Pilgrims late on, both scooping efforts over the bar from 12 yards out.

Danny Davidson also saw a header rebound off Nick Jackson’s head and against the crossbar.

For Stamford, Dan Cotton and Dean Oliver both struck the woodwork, while neither could beat United keeper Ricky Drury, who made great saves to deny both from distance.

Stamford, who have beaten Boston to the shield regularly in recent meetings had a number of Pilgrims old boys in their ranks, including Sedgemore, Wright, Jackson, Liam Parker and Cotton, while Lee Beeson was out injured and Simon Ashton cup-tied.

Another former United man, Jamie Clarke, left the club earlier this week.

As the final whistle blew, penalties would decide the outcome.

In front of the 577-strong crowd, Stamford’s Andy Toyne, Jackson, Matt Cook and Cotton all converted.

Boston’s Marc Newsham, Danny Davidson and Lee all found the net.

But captain James Cullingworth blasted over the bar and Stef Frost gifted Stamford the title when his weak effort was comfortably blocked by Wright.
