YOU won’t be able to hear a pin drop, but the Jakemans Stadium dressing room is a quieter place to be these days.
Anthony Church, Jamie Yates and Shaun Pearson were not just important players on the pitch, they were big personalities off it as well.
And with the trio all leaving the club – Pearson and Church to Blue Square Bet Premier Grimsby Town, and Yates to rivals Gainsborough Trinity – manager Lee Canoville concedes the dressing room is a quieter place this term.
“We lost a couple of big characters in Shaun and Churchy, and Yatesy was a bit of a team joker,” Canoville told The Standard.
“We have lost some big influences in the changing room.”
However, Canoville reckons his new signings will soon pump up the volume, once they get settled at York Street.
Like the new kid at school, it seems footballers also need a little time to adjust to their new surroundings.
The player-manager added: “The dressing room is a bit quieter – but the important thing is the squad’s togetherness is still there.
“We’ve brought some more characters in.
“They’re quiet at the moment because they’re still new, but they’ll soon come out of their shells.
“And I’m sure they’re a little louder when me and Jason (Lee) aren’t there.”
Canoville and Lee may be happy with the faces they’ve added to the squad, but they do admit they still don’t quite know what their best team is.
“We don’t know what our strongest XI is,” Canoville added.
“But we’re close to knowing.
“That’s what pre-season’s all about. We’ve got a competitive squad, and when the season starts we’ll know the team we want to go with.”
