Duncan Browne takes a look at today’s contest...
MATCH RESULT: Boston United 3 (Mills 39, Piergianni 45, 49) AFC Fylde 1 (J. Allen 18)
WHAT WE EXPECTED: Boston were looking for a reaction after last week’s defeat to Solihull Moors. But they were up against a Coasters side who hadn’t been beaten in 14 matches, and 12 of those were victories. The Pilgrims couldn’t pick up three points, surely?
WHAT WE GOT: Check the bins at York Street. Somewhere there’s a form book, ripped up. Aguably the Pilgrims’ best performance of the season... definitely their best since the opening-day success against Barrow.
MAGIC MOMENT: Four minutes after the break Carl Piergianni met Greg Tempest’s corner and - with the goal at his mercy - forced home a header, his second of the day and United’s third. It wasn’t the greatest goal you’ll ever see, but the defender’s heartfelt reaction proved what that goal meant to the whole side. Could this be a sign of more to come?
MAN OF THE MATCH: Tough one to call. kaine Felix caused havoc with his pace, Carl Piergianni scored twice, Zak Mills looked the part in yet another new role, ditto Scott garner, and Greg Tempest chipped in with three assists. Piergianni possibly edges it. Just.
GOAL OF THE GAME: Pick one of Piergianni’s - they were carbon copies.
ONE TO WATCH: Had it not been for the heroics of Fylde keeper Ben Hinchcliffe then the scores could have been even wider.
REF WATCH: Anthony Da Costa set his stall out early on with a yellow card for Fylde’s Adam Sumner, after he tripped Kaine Felix. Probably got the penalty call correct too.
RATINGS: J. Dixon 8, Mills 8, Steer 7, K. Dixon 7 (Thomas 63, 7), Garner 8, Piergianni 9, Marrs 8, Tempest 9, Southwell 7 (Marshall 63, 7), Jones 7 (Hollingsworth 73, 7), Felix 8; Subs (not used): Galinski, Doran.
