Thommo's back in town
LEE Thompson will return to York Street for Saturday's UniBond Challenge Cup quarter-final between Boston United and Ilkeston Town – believing the match should not be taking place.
The former Pilgrim is still bitter at his old team's demotion from the Blue Square North in the summer.
"It is unfair how Boston have been treated," said the player fondly known on the York Street terraces as 'Little Thommo'.
"It was rubbish the way they were dealt with and they shouldn't be playing in this league."
Thompson, 26, left the Pilgrims in the summer, opting to drop down a tier and join Ilkeston.
A matter of days later United were told by the Conference that their financial problems – since resolved by club owners Chestnut Homes – were not acceptable to the league and they were slapped with another demotion.
Thompson has been sidelined with a hamstring injury for six weeks but hopes to play a part in Saturday's clash, where he will go head-to-head with best mate and United striker Jon Froggatt.
Although 100 per cent committed to the Ilkeston cause, Thompson still backs United to pull themselves out of their relegation nightmare.
He added: "I'm massively surprised at their league position – especially as I know how good the players at Boston are.
"They say the further down the leagues you are the tougher it is. We've got some good players at Ilkeston and maybe we've just gelled a bit quicker.
"But there's no doubt about the quality Boston have and I know they'll pull themselves up the table. They just need a run of good form."
Pilgrims boss Steve Welsh was hoping to run the rule over a handful of trialists during last night's practice match at Grantham Town.
"We submitted a couple of seven-day approaches last week and they expire any day now, so fingers crossed that we can speak to people and possibly bring in a couple of new faces," he said.
"Stewart Talbot has gone (to join Kidsgrove) and Lee Beeson has joined Grantham on loan, but that doesn't free up as much money as people think."
BOSTON United versus Ilkeston Town (KO 3pm) will see ticket prices reduced.
A seat in the Staffsmart Stand will cost 6 for adults, 4 concessions and 1 under 16s; terracing – 5, 3 and 1.
