THE Magnet Tavern booked their place in the third round of the FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup on at the weekend – but were made to work for their victory.
Charnwood Sunday League Premier side Wymeswold FC were the guests at Tattershall Road, but goals from Gary King and Mark Lovelace settled the contest.
Within five minutes, Magnet keeper Ricky Lovelace was picking the ball out of the back of his net – but, thankfully for the home side, referee Trevor Basker had been superbly placed to spot an infringement.
Wymeswold saw another first half strike ruled out, this time for offside, while Ricky Lovelace continued to thwart their attacks.
The Magnet had a chance of their own through Lovelace before King gave them the lead a minute before half time, sliding the ball through a defender’s legs, and beyond the reach of the keeper.
After the break Magnet upped their pace.
Jon Fairweather saw a shot blocked on the line, Dan Maddison fired over the bar and Loz Lambley saw two good efforts saved.
At the other end, Ricky Lovelace pulled off a magnificent save rising majestically to palm the ball away from the top right corner.
With five minutes remaining, Simon Ingamells’ side doubled their lead, Fairweather crossing the ball to Mark Lovelace, who slotted home.
The Magnet now travel to face Club Lewsey of the North Home Counties Sunday Premier League on December 11 (KO 1pm).
