Get tough - Scott warns his Boston United squad
Wednesday, 12 noon - ROB Scott has warned his Boston United squad that they're allowing themselves to be mugged.
After watching his Pilgrims waste a string of chances during Saturday's defeat at fellow promotion rivals Kendal Town, the fuming manager told his squad to quit playing the victims.
"You can't feel sorry for yourselves in this game. Someone will take the wallet out of your back pocket if you just stand there moping," Scott told The Standard.
Despite his side putting 10 past lowly Durham last week, the Pilgrims joint-boss reckons his young side need to toughen up and show a more ruthless streak on a regular basis.
"We've been too timid," he continued. "We've posed the question to them, are they going to grow up?
"Too many times we've dominated and haven't stepped up and won, or been in a good position and then naively took our foot off the pedal.
"This team is too nice and that needs to change. I'm not talking about being sent off for stupid things, I mean playing tougher aggressive football.
"The next few weeks will be a test of character as I don't expect us to be up and down all the time. I want a level of consistency."
United can look back at fixtures at Matlock, Bradford Park Avenue and Kendal, to name a few, where they allowed points to slip away.
And had the amber and blacks been stronger in many home contests they would be sitting pretty at then top of the UniBond Premier, not being part of the chasing pack.
Scott is now demanding a new outlook, continuing: "Do the players think that playing for Boston United is enough?
"For me and Paul (Hurst, joint manager) it's not. It doesn't matter what shirt you're wearing, you do your best.
"Just because we're non-league doesn't mean we can't have a professional attitude.
"I will be critical and I will be harsh because I demand more. I don't want to get to the end of the season, look back and rue chances we missed."
