CRISTA Cullen’s Champions Trophy challenge ended in disappointment as Great Britain lost 1-0 to hosts Argentina in the final.

Boston-born Cullen - GB’s leading scorer in the competition - had her side’s best chance of the evening in Rosario, but her effort from a corner was deflected wide.

The Leicester defender scored a total of five goals in the competition as Britain claimed silver.

Silvina D’Elia scored the favourites’ winning goal in the 28th minute on Sunday night, converting a penalty corner.

Cullen posted on her Twitter account: “Gutted with a silver medal, the only +ve (positive) is that it will make us train harder for our aspirations of gold.”

However, the silver lining is that this is the GB women’s highest-ever placing in a world event, coming just months ahead of the Olympic Games on home soil.

Britain beat Germany 2-0 in their semi-final after overcoming Korea 4-1.

In the group stages, GB earned a 3-1 victory over China, Cullen scoring twice.

She also bagged a brace in the 2-2 draw with the Netherlands and was on target in a 3-0 win over Japan.

The Champions Trophy is the International Hockey Federation’s most prestigious annual event.
