It’s Ashok! Kumar hits first half century of the season for Freiston, Leake and Leverton

A FIRST 50 of the season from Ashok Kumar helped Freiston beat Dale Taverners in their annual fixture.

Having won the toss, skipper Richard Paul had no hesitation batting first against the Leicester-based touring side.

As has been the pattern this season, Freiston lost early wickets in the face of some accurate opening bowling.

J. Allen dismissed all of Freiston’s top three before Sandell superbly dismissed Stewart Kirtley caught and bowled.

When Rob Burns was bowled for seven, Freiston looked in trouble at 45-5.

However, Ashok Kumar had other ideas, batting in typically aggressive style the all-rounder struck the ball to all parts.

He clubbed three sixes in his innings of exactly 50 before he was bowled by Karam.

After the fireworks from Kumar, John Goodfellow continued the good work making 26, while Ollie Booth made 13 and Graham Kirtley 15.

Freiston closed on 159 as, once again, the lower order provided the majority of the runs.

With the ball Freiston started well. Ollie Booth and Sean Burns gave nothing away in their opening spells.

Booth deservedly had Rippin bowled for two.

With the scoring rate still low, Charles Lenton bowled Jones and John Goodfellow dismissed Rathad.

Good work from Graham Kirtley saw Appleby run out for 14 before two more wickets from Lenton put the visitors further into the mire.

A direct hit from the deep by Sean Burns saw Young run out before a wicket apiece from Booth and Kumar ended the Dale innings.
