Jordan drives to tee trophy

Wednesday, 9am - TWO Boston golfers have proven themselves against the world's best youngsters with successes in the US Kids Golf European Championships.

Last week, Jordan Wrisdale finished a superb second in the boys' 13 years category while Billy Spooner came a fantastic fifth in the boys' 11 years event – both of them among the youngest competitors in their fields.

The event was held between Tuesday and Thursday in East Lothian, Scotland.

Playing on the tough Luffness links course – where The Open qualifiers are held when the event is staged at Muirfield – 13-year-old Jordan coped well with the windy conditions to complete day one in 77 shots.

From then on he improved each round, finishing day two on 76 before completing his final round in a par 72.

Overall winner Frank Garber, from Washington, USA, surprised the field by shooting an amazing day two 67, eventually finishing 10 shots ahead of Jordan, who lives in Fishtoft.

"I'm happy with how I did, especially as I was playing blind," said Giles School pupil Jordan, who was unable to practice on the course due to arriving late after being caught up in Bank Holiday traffic.

However, the reason Jordan opted to travel up the day before the event began was because he spent Sunday retaining his Lincolnshire under 14s title.

But, unfazed, he took everything in his stride to complete a great finish to the tournament.

He added: "On the final day I went out with the last group. I think that helped me, as playing with them made me improve my game."

And to make his success even more extraordinary, Jordan has only been playing the sport for four years.

Billy, from Wyberton, shot rounds of 82, 74 and 75 to finish fifth in his category.

"I'm delighted because there are many positives to be taken from this," said Billy's dad Andy this week.

St Thomas' pupil Billy's fifth-placed finish was enough to take the final qualification place for the US Kids Golf World Championships at America's world-famous Pinehurst course in August.

However, as a former winner of the event, his qualification was guaranteed before the tournament.

Billy also took part in the Van Horn Cup, representing Europe at Gullane Golf Club against a Rest of the World team over the weekend, winning his match with a 66.

Jordan is too old for the under 12s event but hopes he can now compete in the teenagers' equivalent, also held at Pinehurst in August.

Both Jordan and Billy are coached at Boston Golf Club by Nick Hiom.
